This past weekend both soccer teams were away for two games with one against SAIT and one with Olds.
The women finished the weekend with a tie against SAIT and a loss against Olds. In the SAIT game, a goal in the 18th minute from our leading goal scorer Jadyn Fode gave the Rattlers an early lead on a well-earned penalty shot. That lead was doubled in the 31st minute by a goal by Brazilian striker Maisa Rebello only to have it cut in half again a minute later on a SAIT goal by Jade Metz. Before halftime SAIT would strike again to tie it up the match going into the halftime break. The second half was back and forth before SAIT took the lead for the first time on a goal by Mackenzie Georgsen in the 76th minute to take a 3-2 lead. Pushing for the equalizer, the Rattlers earned another penalty shot which was converted by Jadyn Fode once again to tie the game at 3-3. This would be the way the game would finish as Jadyn Fode was named the Player of the Game.
On a great Sunday afternoon for soccer the Rattlers took on the 6th ranked Olds College Broncos. The first half featured a total of 24 shots but none of them found the back of the net as goalkeepers Amanda Oevering & Jewels Hallock were solid in net throughout the first half and the rest of the match. Controversy arose in the 70th minute as a penalty shot was called for a hand ball. After deliberation and consultation with all other match officials the referee gave the penalty shot against recommendation from the other officials. Olds striker Katharina Oeltermann would score to take the 1-0 lead. Constant pressure late by the Rattlers would yield them no reward as they would fall 1-0 to the Broncos. Player of the Game went to Amanda Oevering.
As for the men, the battle against SAIT Trojans was a tough one with SAIT controlling most of the game. An early chance by Abdou Raouf Mohamed tested the 'keeper of SAIT in the 20th minute causing him to have to dive and tip the ball over the crossbar. After that save the Trojans went down to the other end and earned a penalty shot as the Rattlers fouled an incoming striker. On the penalty shit Eduardo Filho made no mistake and scored to take the early lead and he half would finish 1-0. In the 2nd half the Trojans fired 15 shots at Joao Batista but none of the found the back of the net. The Rattlers struggled to find any offense in the second half but defended well losing 1-0. Joao was named Player of the game.
On Sunday the team batted the Olds College Broncos in their Staff & Faculty Appreciation game. The Broncos energized the crowd early as they took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Argentinian striker Fabian Gromenida in the 14th minute. The Rattlers answered 12 minutes later by none other than Abdou Raouf Mohamed to tie it up. Just 10 minutes later he would score his second of the game and his 8th of the season to take a 2-1 lead into the halftime break. Olds would come on strong in the 2nd half but they could not come up with an equalizer as the Rattlers took 3 points from Olds in a 2-1 win. Tom Bernhardt was named Player of the Game.
Next up for the Rattlers soccer teams is a home game against highway 3 rivals the Lethbridge Kodiaks on Saturday. Kickoff for the women is 12:00 with the men to follow at 2:00.
