Local Standout Hannah Markusson Signs with Rattlers

The Medicine Hat Rattlers Women’s Basketball program is proud to officially announce the signing of local talent Hannah Markusson for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. A dynamic point guard from Medicine Hat High School, Markusson will begin her post-secondary journey in General Studies at Medicine Hat College.

This signing represents more than just a roster addition, it is a heartfelt homecoming that spans three generations of Rattlers history. Hannah’s arrival at the college continues a deep-rooted family tradition of athletic excellence at MHC. Her father, Jeff Markusson, has served as an instructor and previously managed the Be Fit For Life Centre, but the athletic roots go even deeper.

Hannah follows in the footsteps of her grandfather, Armand Cheret, and her late mother, Claudette Markusson. This connection is highlighted by a special moment in Rattlers history: Armand served as the head coach of the Women’s Soccer team during the 1999-2000 season with his daughter, Claudette, on the roster. Together, the father-daughter duo helped lead the program to an CCAA Silver Medal after being ACAC champions. Claudette, a spirited athlete and Education graduate who passed away in 2020, is remembered for her infectious laugh and unwavering support of her children. Her competitive spirit and love for the game will now live on through Hannah as she steps onto the court in Rattlers colors.

On the basketball court, Hannah has been a consistent force for the Medicine Hat High School Hawks. She competed at the varsity level throughout all three years of high school, playing a pivotal role in helping her team qualify for provincials in both her Grade 10 and Grade 11 seasons. Described as a relentless competitor, she is known for her defensive intensity and exceptional rebounding ability for a guard. Offensively, she controls the pace as a true floor general, creating opportunities for teammates and scoring when necessary.

Rattlers Head Coach Chad Watson expressed his enthusiasm for the new recruit, noting that what stands out most is her leadership. He describes Hannah as a vocal presence who brings constant energy and elevates the play of everyone around her, predicting she will make a significant impact both on and off the court.

Markusson credits her development to the guidance of her high school coaches, specifically Coach Getz and Coach Wagenaar, thanking them for helping hone her skills and leadership abilities over the years. The Athletics Department invites the community to welcome Hannah as she carries on a proud family legacy this coming season.
